Threaded flanges are a special type of pipe flanges that can be attached to the pipe without welding. The nature of the threaded connection makes the threaded flange a viable option when welding is not feasible, such as in highly flammable or explosive areas.
It is similar to the slip-on flange or a socket weld flange, fitted with a tapered thread (screw) inside the flange bore that is mounted on the pipe with corresponding external threads.
In some cases, a seal weld is also applied in conjunction with a threaded pipe flange. But this weld seal would lose the purpose of a threaded flange as a structural option, as its primary advantage is to assemble and disassemble the connection.
Though threaded pipe flange is available in different dimensions, it is commonly used only on smaller diameter pipes(Below 4 inches normally), or smaller and with design temperature not exceeding 250°F. It is not suitable for conditions involving high temperatures, cyclic stresses, or corrosive fluid.
